Rostering is the part of a district rollout that quietly eats a semester. Somebody exports a CSV, somebody else re-imports it, a hundred students get created twice, and by October nobody trusts the class lists.
If your district runs Clever, that work is now unnecessary. PaperScorer reads directly from the roster data your district already maintains, and sends scores back the other way.
The three pieces
Clever isn't one product, and the distinction matters when you're working out what you already have and what you'd be adding.
Secure Sync is rostering. Schools, teachers, sections and students flow from your SIS into Clever, and PaperScorer reads them from there. When a student transfers in March, they appear — nobody re-uploads anything.
Instant Login is single sign-on. Teachers and students reach PaperScorer with the account they already use every morning. No new password, nothing for the help desk to reset in September.
LMS Connect is the newer piece, and the one that closes the loop. It lets PaperScorer write grades back into your district's LMS — Canvas, Schoology or Google Classroom — using the same connection that already carries your roster data.
Why LMS Connect matters for paper tests
Rostering alone gets students into PaperScorer. LMS Connect is what gets scores out and into the gradebook teachers actually open. Without it you have accurate class lists and a manual export at the end; with it, a scanned answer sheet lands in the gradebook on its own.
The reconciliation problem it solves
Any district that has run two systems side by side knows the failure mode: the same student exists twice with slightly different identifiers, and half their work attaches to the wrong record.
Clever handles this by translating its own IDs to the LMS's IDs before anything is written. Your PaperScorer roster, your Clever roster and your LMS roster stay pointed at the same person, which is the part that makes automatic grade passback safe to turn on across a whole district rather than one willing pilot classroom.
What a district gets
What it requires
Two prerequisites, both on Clever's side rather than ours:
- Your district needs a Clever Complete subscription — that's negotiated with Clever directly
- LMS Connect is available to existing Secure Sync partners, and each district connects its own LMS through Clever's setup flow
If your district is already rostering other applications through Clever, most of this is in place and the remaining step is connecting the LMS.
Pricing, plainly
Clever rostering and Instant Login are part of your PaperScorer Enterprise plan, which is priced per student and works the same way for every district.
Grade passback through LMS Connect is charged in addition to that — licensed per school site, per year. It's a separate line rather than a bump to the per-student rate, because most districts start it at a handful of sites before rolling it wider.
We'll quote based on how many sites you want it on. There's no self-serve toggle here, and that's deliberate: LMS Connect touches gradebooks across a district, so it's worth a conversation before it goes live.
Key takeaway
Secure Sync brings rosters in, Instant Login handles sign-on, and LMS Connect sends scores back to the district's gradebook — with Clever matching its IDs to the LMS's so nobody ends up duplicated. Rostering and sign-on come with Enterprise; LMS Connect is a separate per-site charge on top.
Where to start
If you already roster through Clever, start by checking whether your district has Clever Complete and which LMS you'd be connecting. Those two answers determine everything else, and they're usually a short conversation with whoever manages your Clever account.
